The Penguin Programme
- Provides a friendly, safe and relaxed environment, in which children can both learn and have fun, gaining a sense of achievement through everything they do.
- Stimulates the interest of children in a wide variety of activities, including basic First Aid.
- Encourages the awareness of common sense, honesty, self-control, courage and a sense of fair-play.
How it works
- Penguins meet once a week during the school term at their local division.
- Penguins follow a course of nine badges, each divided into main topics.
- For each badge that is completed, a Penguin is awarded a colourful sew-on badge and matching certificate.
- Contact between other divisions is encouraged through various social functions.
Joining the Penguin Programme
When children join we hold a small enrolment ceremony to welcome them. They receive a Penguin Starter Pack that includes a uniform, a folder for their badge material, and some fun items for them to keep. They also have a 'buddy' to help them settle in.
Become a Super Penguin!
It usually takes 2 years to complete all 9 badges. A Penguin who succeeds in completing all the badges becomes a “Super Penguin” and is awarded a certificate and sew-on badge to mark his / her achievement.

The next steps
At the age of eight, Penguins can move up to the Cadet Programme and begin working towards the Grand Prior’s Award. They cannot join St John Youth before their eighth birthday, and cannot remain in a Penguin Programme when they reach the age of nine.
